Choosing a Domain Name

You might want to go for a domain name that people easily can remember and associate with the business you are doing (like microsoft.com) or you could opt for one that consists of your main keywords. For example, if you are a used car dealer, you could look for a name like usedcars.co.uk. It may not be quite that simple of course - there will be many used car dealers already on-line, so you might have to add further information to your domain name (e.g. cheapusedcars.co.uk).

If you operate in an area of business where there is relatively high competition (as in the 'used cars' example above), then it may be wise to go for a 'keywords' domain name. When potential customers use a search engine to find a business in your field, they will most often type keywords in the search bar.

If your domain name contains one or more keywords, your website will have an advantage over sites that don't have exact keyword domain names

Tips for Choosing a Domain Name

  • Use a Top Level Domain (TLD) for the country in which you operate. A co.uk domain name will instantly tell your potential customers that you're UK based. If you also do business overseas, consider also purchasing a .com or the TLD for the countries in which you trade (e.g .de for Germany, .fr for France, .au for Australia etc).
  • Use the fewest letters possible - shorter names are easier to remember and less likely to be mis-spelled.
  • Don't use hyphens in your domain name where possible. A domain name with hyphens is harder to pronounce when said out aloud.
  • Make sure your chosen domain name doesn't infringe any trademarks, and avoid a name that's very similar to an existing one - you want to create your own distinct brand name and not face legal challenges.
  • Use a popular keyword for your market or industry in your domain name. Searches conducted on some search engines will give a higher ranking to websites that contain a keyword in their title.
  • Check the availability of your choice with a domain name search company and snap it up quickly if it's not used. Also, register your name for as long as possible so it doesn't expire from underneath you and leave you embarrased.
